Nishimachi students have the opportunity to develop an appreciation of Mathematics and its applications in their everyday lives. The study of the subject enables students to develop a positive self-concept as learners of Mathematics, obtain enjoyment from Mathematics, and become self-motivated learners through inquiry and active participation in challenging and engaging hands-on experiences and mathematical projects. To participate fully in society, students need to develop the capacity to critically evaluate ideas and arguments that involve mathematical concepts or that are presented in mathematical form.
Mathematics education provides the opportunity for students to develop decision-making skills, and encourages them to become innovative and flexible problem solvers in a community of learners. It requires skills such as observation, investigation and comparison of patterns and relationships. On a daily basis, it is concerned with practical applications and generalizations as well as abstraction at a higher level.
Grade 6 and 7 follow a pre-Algebra curriculum in mixed ability classes. Grade 8 students study Algebra and grade nine engages in high school geometry. In Grades 8 and 9, the Honors class provides an extension of the Standard level content and skills.
