Be Nice, Give Some Rice!

December 2007

Picture this; you come home one night only to hear that your parents don't have enough money for dinner. For many families in Japan, this is reality.
We decided to organize a rice drive because we wanted to do some community service and we had heard about some programs that distributed food to people who couldn't afford it. First, we stood up at our weekly elementary assembly and told everyone about Second Harvest and our goal for donating 500 kg of rice to the organization. Then, we made a bar graph on the school's wall with a section for each grade and one for faculty, so everyone could see how much rice each grade brought in. On the day the drive started, we stood at the school gates and collected rice from those who brought it in. If a grade level brought in 10 kilos, they would get one piece of origami on our bar graph. A lot of students have been contributing to the drive, and currently we have 253 kilos! We have been putting posters up around the school and announcing our improvements at the weekly assembly. We accept any type of rice and any amount. Since we are loading the rice into the truck on Monday the 10th, please label the bags and bring them to school.
