The Japanese language program at Nishimachi will help students gain the appropriate and sufficient skills at their level, be able to apply them in and contribute to Japanese society. Students will be able to think independently, select and synthesize information and communicate their thoughts, ideas, and opinions in Japanese. By learning Japanese at Nishimachi, students will gain intercultural, and global understanding, which will enable lifelong learning of languages.

The Japanese language program at Nishimachi is compulsory. All elementary school students attend Japanese class from 40 to 60 minutes per day.

Students are grouped by Japanese language proficiency through assessments by the Japanese team. Levels range from 1 through 9, with 1 as Fully Proficient to the grade-level, and Level 9 as the entry-level. As the levels of proficiency advance, modified Japanese curriculum guidelines of Monbukagaku-sho and its approved materials are used. The classes for the students who study Japanese as an additional language draw upon a variety of teaching materials and strategies for second language instruction based on modified CEFR learning goals. (See Japanese Language Studies Continuum below.)
